[solved] Streaming Live BBC Radio on Windows 7

Postby machare » 02 Mar 2010 12:19

I would like to be able to stream live BBC iPlayer aac encoded radio on my Windows 7 PC:
So far it appears that I can stream this but not hear it!

If, on my Windows 7 PC I run:

c:\Progra~1\get_iplayer\get_iplayer --stream --type=tv "http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/playlive/bbc_two" --player="c:\Progra~1\get_iplayer\mplayer\MPlayer-1.0rc2\mplayer -cache 512 -"

I can see and hear BBC One tv.

OTOH, if I run:

c:\Progra~1\get_iplayer\get_iplayer --stream --type=liveradio "Radio 1" --player="c:\Progra~1\get_iplayer\mplayer\MPlayer-1.0rc2\mplayer -cache 128 -"

I clearly see incrementing numbers showing that something is being received, but I hear nothing. There is an error message:

101.535 kB / 6.17 sec[flv @ 00E1E768]Unsupported audio codec (a)

I think that on Linux all the programmes are available in the path, and can therefore be found. On W7 the programmes are not in the path which is why I have modified the command to use the full path name. (c:\Pro... etc)

I don't know why I get the error message. I am able to use mplayer to listen to *.aac files of past programmes that I have downloaded with get_iplayer.

Any help would be gratefully received.

Some AAC streams use different features of AAC. Try streaming via vlc and see if that helps...

hi machare,

I found that *this* build of mplayer works for me with Win7 - don't know the exact nature of the differences between this and the build provided with get_iplayer in this regard

http://oss.netfarm.it/mplayer-win32.php

hope this helps!

cheers,
m

I also tried VLC. that did not work either.

I have since tried to run the same tests on Ubuntu 9.04

Peversely the radio works with mplayer, but not the TV!

Thank you, I am now running the MPlayer-p4-svn-30815 version and that works much better. I can listen to the radio and watch TV!

I'm tryng to build a drop-in replacement zip for mplayer based on this build. Did you get the Full package or the optimised build. Or can you just check the contents of the codec dir under the mplayer installation and let me know if it is empty?

If you run the installer and re-install the MPlayer component you will now get the newest build :-)

The codecs directory is empty.

The first time I ran get_iplayer using the new mplayer it appeared to spend its time checking every font on my PC. That did not happen the second time.
