[solved] iphone versions not available for TV transmission

Postby tvdavid » 23 Feb 2010 13:29

Programmes transmitted on BBC TV since 22 February don't seem to have an iphone version. I am for the time being unable to get MP4s to download because of my FFMPEG version, and so have to rely on the iphone download. I can still download programmes originating before that date, and as of this morning radio broadcasts were still available in MP3 format. The error I get is as follows:

ERROR: Failed to get iphone URL from iplayer site

Have the BBC changed things again please?

I've just looked at --info for a few programmes, and it looks as though flashhd modes are not there either. Are n95_wifi and n95_3g any use to you (although some programmes don't have those modes)? Are you able to run VLC on your platform to play the flash modes? Do you have any flv player?

Sorry, flashhd is a red herring. flashhd modes are still available. What seems to have happened is that the Olympics are not available on iPlayer in HD but are dominating the HD Channel, so in the last few days there has been a huge reduction in the amount of HD material on iPlayer. It seems if a programme wasn't transmitted in HD, even though it may have been made in HD, you can't watch it in HD on iPlayer.

I have found this in iPlayer help. I can't find any date on the page, so I don't know if it's new.
Why can't I download programmes onto my iPhone or iPod touch?

Because of the different way each individual handset works, not all features of BBC iPlayer will be available on all handsets. Obviously, we're working to make the service work as uniformly as we can across handsets but it's not always possible.

At the moment it's not technically possible to make rights-protected BBC iPlayer programmes available for download in a format compatible with the iPhone or iPod touch.

On second thoughts it isn't relevant. The earlier FAQ on the iPhone says it can only stream over WiFi, which is what get_iplayer simulates.

There is no change as far as I know although there does seem to be an absence of quite a number of BBC Two programmes even on the iPhone itself for the last few days.

I am not sure you are right about being able to download earlier programmes. As far as I can see all TV iphone modes have been removed, or more accurately are not shown by get_iplayer --info.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00r40zf seems to be one example of many where it is still working. I think there is an iPhone issue at BBC. If you have an iPhone go test it for yourself...

For your example I get
Code: Select all
modes:          default: flashhigh1,flashhigh2,flashstd1,flashstd2,flashvhigh1,f
lashvhigh2,n95_3g1,n95_wifi1,subtitles1
modesizes:      default: flashhigh1=350MB,flashhigh2=350MB,flashstd1=211MB,flash
std2=211MB,flashvhigh1=659MB,flashvhigh2=659MB,n95_3g1=45MB,n95_wifi1=81MB

I don't have an iphone, so I can't check it on that. Could it be that --info is not picking up all the modes? In the last couple of days the n95 modes seem to have taken a day or so to appear. As I don't use the TV iphone or n95 modes myself I can't say if this is new.

Interestingly 2 programmes I failed to record earlier in the week by iphone mode have now recorded fine in that mode - mmmm. Many thanks to everyone for help - looks like sometimes it takes a while for stuff to get into the pipeline. Someone isn't putting enough coal on the fire!

iPhone downloads currently seem to work on the iPhone but not get_iplayer. Example: The Bottom Line (TV).
